The City Weekend

Two nights in a proper city, done the way the residents would do it.

Weekend in the city - panoramio (3)

The city weekend is the most repeatable trip in American travel, and the most commonly wasted. Two nights is enough time to do a city properly and not nearly enough to do it completely, which means the whole game is selection, one neighborhood over five, one museum over three, the reservation that anchors the evening rather than the list that exhausts it. The regulars of any great city will tell you the same thing, which is that the city rewards depth and punishes coverage.

Every city in this edition is one someone returns to annually, and the pieces are written from that habit. They skip what the first-time lists insist on and supply what the returning visitor actually needs, which season, which streets, which tables book out, and what the residents do on the weekends they stay home.

The range is deliberate. New York appears three times, in spring, in fall, and at Christmas, because the city is honestly three different destinations by season. Washington is here with its old ports, Nashville with the version the residents keep for themselves, Fort Worth and Dallas as a single unhurried run, San Diego from the water up, Beverly Hills running its old script, and Las Vegas taken, for once, entirely on your own terms.

Pick the city by the season and the season by the city. Book the one serious dinner before you leave home, plan one thing per day and let the rest happen, and walk everything that can be walked. Two nights, done this way, is a full trip. That is the whole secret of the form.
