The First Timer's Mistakes

The marquee destinations, debugged. Every famous place has five avoidable errors, and these pieces retire them.

Every famous destination has a shadow itinerary of mistakes, made so reliably by first-time visitors that the locals can narrate them from a porch. The wrong month, the unnecessary car, the reservation attempted too late, the marquee attraction visited at the exact hour everyone else had the same idea. None of these errors ruins character or scenery, but each one taxes the trip, and the taxes compound.

The mistakes persist because nobody is paid to correct them. The booking sites profit from the wrong week as happily as the right one, and the guidebooks list what exists rather than what to decline. The regulars know better, but the regulars are on the porch. These pieces are the porch, transcribed.

Each piece in this series takes one great destination and retires its five or six standing errors, plainly, with the reasoning attached. When to go and when not to, how to arrive, what the car decision actually costs, which bookings must happen before the trip is even discussed at dinner, and what to skip entirely, including a few things the postcards insist on.

None of this is meant to reduce travel to logistics. It is meant to spend the logistics early so the trip itself can be spent on the place. The mistakes are the fluff. What remains, once they are gone, is the destination as the returning visitor knows it, which was the point all along.
