The Horse Country

Bluegrass, hunt country, and the towns that run on the racing calendar.

Horses grazing in serene countryside at sunset

There are two Americas where the horse still organizes everything, the bluegrass of Kentucky and the hunt country of northern Virginia, and both receive visitors on their own terms. The fences run for miles, the barns outrank the houses, and the year turns on a racing calendar that the locals carry in their heads. A visitor who learns even a little of that calendar is treated less like a tourist and more like a late arrival to a standing engagement.

The horse country rewards a particular pace. The mornings matter, since that is when the work happens, horses on the track at first light with coffee steaming in the grandstand, and the afternoons are for the small towns, the tack shops and taverns and long lunches that have served the farms for two centuries. Nothing here is staged for you, which is precisely the appeal.

This edition rides both circuits. It runs from Louisville through the bourbon country to Lexington, timed to the April meet at Keeneland, where the crowd still dresses and the racing is the point, and it drives west out of Washington into the Virginia hunt country, where Leesburg and Middleburg have been feeding foxhunters since the seventeen hundreds and see no reason to modernize the arrangement.

Go in April or October, when the meets run and the country is at its best. Book the small inns early, rise for the morning works at least once, and let the afternoon take care of itself. The horses set the schedule here, and the schedule has not changed in a hundred years.
