The Money Pieces

Where to splurge, where to save, and the quiet arithmetic of the great destinations, stated out loud.

Every destination has an economy, and the visitor is either playing it or being played by it. The resort town where the rates drop by half the week after the holiday, the city where the business hotels give their weekends away, the island where the splurge hotel is worth every dollar and the splurge restaurant is not, and none of it is secret, exactly. It is simply unspoken, because nobody in the transaction profits from saying it out loud. This series says it out loud.

The governing principle is that money in travel is not spent evenly. In every place, one or two purchases carry the trip, the room with the view that becomes the trip's living room, the guide who unlocks the water, the table that becomes the anniversary, and a long tail of expenses carries nothing at all. The skill is not spending less. The skill is knowing which purchases are the trip and funding them by declining the ones that are merely adjacent to it.

The pieces in this series work the arithmetic destination by destination, where the high season is worth its premium and where the shoulder delivers the same trip at a discount, which upgrades pay and which flatter, what the locals pay for the same pleasures, and the standing traps, the fees, the packages, the conveniences, that tax the unwary at every famous address.

None of this is about traveling cheaply, which is its own discipline and a different magazine. It is about traveling deliberately, which every budget can afford. The destination sets the prices. The visitor, better informed, sets the terms.
