The Standing Reservation

The family trips taken the same week every year, and the places built to receive them.

Elegant nighttime glassware with ambient lighting

Every family that travels well has one trip it does not discuss, because the discussion ended years ago. The same island, the same week, often the same house or the same floor of the same hotel, booked on the drive home from the year before. The standing reservation is the opposite of a vacation decision. It is a family tradition that happens to involve luggage, and the places that receive these families, year over year and generation over generation, are a category of their own.

Such places share an architecture of return. The bicycles matter more than the nightlife, the beach or the pool sits at the center of the day, the restaurants know how to feed a table of nine at six in the evening, and the staff turnover is low enough that somebody remembers you. Children measure their lives in these summers, which the places understand and take seriously.

This edition covers the great standing reservations of the Southeast and beyond. It settles into Hilton Head, where the island's design covenants have kept the place looking like itself for sixty years, runs the Golden Isles end to end from Jekyll to Sea Island, follows the First Coast from Amelia Island down to Ponte Vedra, and gives the family week at Disney the same treatment the regulars give it, which is to say a system, refined annually, that makes the whole thing look easy.

If your family does not yet have a standing reservation, this edition is a menu. Choose the place, book the same week for next year before you leave, and let the tradition start doing its quiet work. The trip gets better every year you repeat it. That is the entire design.
