Winter Address

Some places do their best work after the summer people go home. Where to spend the cold months, from the high desert to the Gulf.

The light changes first. It loses its mid-year weight and sharpens against the pale stone of the porch. When the tourists pull their stakes and the humid commotion of July dissolves, a place finally settles into its own bones. This is when the true geography reveals itself.

We are looking for quiet. We want the smell of wet pine needles, the scrape of a metal shovel on a gravel drive, and the way a fire sounds when the windows are tightly shut. These months ask for a different pace, one that favors the long read and the slow walk.

Winter is not a state of suspension. It is a time for return. We move toward the high desert scrub and the salt-crusted docks of the Gulf, looking for the stillness that only arrives when the world goes cold.
