The Island Week

Nantucket rewards the full week the way it rewarded whalers, slowly, and the rental-house rhythm is the correct method.
Nantucket is a full-week island by geography and temperament, thirty miles at sea, reached by a ferry that functions as a decompression chamber per the crossing doctrine of these pages, and organized, from its rental houses to its beach permits, around the seven-day rhythm the summer people have kept for a century. The weekend visitor samples the cobblestones. The week visitor gets the island, which reveals itself, per the full-week series' whole argument, at precisely the rate of one layer per day.
The house and the rhythm
The rental house is the week's instrument, gray-shingled, hydrangea-hedged, provisioned on arrival day from the farm trucks and the fish markets, and the rhythm assembles itself by the second morning, the beach chosen by wind rather than habit, sound side calm or south shore surf, the bicycles doing the errands, and the outdoor shower, the island's true architectural signature, marking the day's hinges. The house dinner, grilled fish and farm corn, alternates with the town tables per the standing rules.
The days assemble
The week's middle days distribute the island's inventory without hurry, the moors and the lighthouses by bicycle, the far village's rose-covered lanes per the island's pieces, the harbor sails and the fishing charters by weather, the whaling museum's great hall on the fog day the week will certainly supply, and one long walk on the wild south shore with the surf drumming, which recalibrates whatever needed it.
The conversions
The week's alchemy, per the series' doctrine, happens past day four, the watch coming off, the ferry schedule forgotten, the second trip to the same beach revealing what the first missed, and the household's factions dissolving into the island's rhythm of salt, sun, and supper. The departures book the next year's week before the boat docks, which is how the standing reservations of these pages begin.
Getting it right
Book the house by winter for the summer weeks, Saturday to Saturday per island custom, and provision big on arrival rather than daily. Rent bicycles for the duration, not the day. Take the week in late June for the roses or September for the warm sound and softened terms, per the island's other pieces, and leave one day entirely unplanned, which the island will fill better than you would have.
